Mutant-pop? Psyche-indie? You decide!
Animal Collective released their new single 'Walker' through a music video directed by Abby and Dave Portner. “'Walker' is largely a tribute to Scott Walker, who passed away around the time I started writing the song,” said Noah Lennox in an interview with Zane Lowe. “Scott's music has meant a lot to me and he will always be a huge inspiration. But there's also a kind of exhaustion and resignation for the 'Walker' singer that hides a darker layer.” 'Walker' and previously released single 'Prester John' will appear on Animal Collective's new album, Time Skiffs, which will be released on February 4, 2022 on Domino. The group will tour the United States in March 2022 with the support of L’Rain.
As director Abby Portner describes: “Dave was a lot of fun to collaborate with on this video, there were so many drawings and connections on how to make the album cover come to life, and so much experimenting with band moves and acrobats to figure out how to get the flow right. I've been on a set with such enthusiasm and applause after takes when it all clicked into place. It was such a warm and hardworking team that helped us figure out how to make it all happen and it's one of my favorite directing experiences."
Time Skiffs, the quartet's first studio album in more than half a decade, feels like listening to a conversation between four old friends, just as it did during their early days together or in their Strawberry Jam heyday. These nine songs are love letters, distress signals, en plein air remarks, and relaxation hymns; the broadcasts collected from four people who grew up in relationships, parenting, and adult concern. But they're rendered with the Animal Collective's unique sense of exploratory wonder, as they always were. There are harmonies so rich you want to parachute through their air, textures so fascinating you want to decode their sorcery, rhythms so intricate you want to unravel their sources. Here is the Animal Collective with more than 20 years, still in search of what is to come.
